Day One – First Sail

One week after purchasing my boat it was time to take it out on the water for its first spin. I arrived at sugarloaf sailing club full of excitement and was greeted with hospiltality by the local guys. As the guys at the club marveled over the new boat my nerves were on the increase. It was time to start the rigging. We raised the mast with ease, next came the rudders (well it would of help if i bought the tiller) nothing a quick trip home cant fix. Now it was time to raise the sail, but wait how do we attach the sail to the top of the mast? dam i forgot the attachment, luckily one of the guys from the club could lend me one of his spares. Eventually it was time to launch, as i danced around the tramp trying to insert the centerboards the boat was heading very close to the shoreline. Luckily i got every think sorted and was able to generate some good speed downwind in the light air. As the start of the race drew nearer i decided that i would just take some time to come to terms with my new boat.

Eventually i decided to attack the course, to my surprise i actually did ok. Saying that i had a fair bit trouble tacking, and was constantly in irons. All in all it was a great intro to the boat and im dam excited about my next sail. I need to change a few rigging issues in between my next sail which will save me a great amount of time.

Grails: My First Look

Recently i was searching the web for web application frameworks when i stumbled across GRAILS. For those that have not heard, Basically Grails is a Groovy version of the “Ruby on Rails” web development framework. Grails emphasizes convention over configuration; everything has its place and is just configured to work out-of-the-box. Groovy is a scripting language for the JVM with a simplified Java-like syntax, and many Ruby-like features.

Out of the box Grails provides CRUD screens, pagination, application server (no configuration necessary),data persistence (no setup required) and a simple web framework that allows you to create web applications in minutes. When developing Grail application you start by creating a basic “Domain Model” class for which we then use Grails scaffold concept for generating controllers, dao’s, services and views.

5 Simple Steps for Creating a Grails Application

Install the Grails Release
Open a terminal window
Execute the following command: grails create-app APP_NAME where APP_NAME is the name you wish to call your application.
Run the application using the following command: grails run-app
In your favorite web browser navigate to http://localhost:8080/APP_NAME
